reference · these appear in place, not on a page of their own
the states nobody designs, and everybody meets
When things go wrong.
Four failures that will happen to any author advertising for a year. Each one is shown here as it would appear — at the top of the affected page, never as an email you find on Tuesday. Silent failure is the expensive kind.
1 · appears on every ads page the most damaging, because it looks like nothing
what we know
Last successful call04:11 today · reading the search-term report
What Amazon returned401 — token expired · not revoked, not suspended
Still running on Amazon6 campaigns · spending normally
Decisions we could not apply2 · both spend-reducing, held in the queue
Why the banner rather than an email. Amazon’s tokens expire on a schedule nobody controls, and the failure has no symptom — sales just quietly drift. This project has already lost a month of KDP data to exactly this. Anything that touches your money says so on the screen you are already looking at.
2 · appears on the book, and in decisions a normal Tuesday, not a crisis
what was refused, and what we would use instead
“best christmas horror”superlative claim → “christmas horror stories”
“better than the turn of the screw”names a competitor comparatively → “gothic ghost novella”
“free winter book”implies free → dropped, it is on your blocked list anyway
“stephen king style”another author’s name → “small town horror”
Rejections are routine and the reasons are learnable. Superlatives, competitor names and anything implying free are refused almost every time. We check for those before submitting, which is why four were refused rather than forty — but Amazon’s line moves, so some always get through and come back.
3 · appears on the book and the dashboard the wall working exactly as designed
what stopping early cost, and what raising it would buy
Spent$40.00 of $40 · in 23 days
Earned$71.40 · $1.79 back per $1
8 dark days would havecost about $13.90, returned about $24.90 · at this month’s rate
If you raise itthe extra $20 is charged only if it is spent · nothing retroactive
This is the screen that proves the ceiling is real. Amazon enforced it, not us. And note what the page does not do: no mode raises this on its own, however obviously profitable it looks. Autopilot can move money inside your ceiling. Only you move the ceiling.
4 · appears on the book easy to miss, and it wastes the whole budget
what we saw

Spent while unbuyable$4.10 · 31 clicks, 0 orders
The Kindle editionstill fine · that campaign is untouched
Amazon will happily take your money for an unbuyable book. Nothing on their side connects the ad to the buy box, so this can run for weeks unnoticed. We check every advertised book’s detail page daily and pause on sight — this is a saving no bid tuning could match, and pausing only ever spends less, so it never waits for you.
The rule underneath all four one sentence
Anything that spends your money while broken gets stopped first and reported second. Anything that only stops spending never waits for permission.
That is why an unbuyable book is paused before you are told, why a lapsed connection offers to pause everything, and why a reached ceiling does nothing at all until you choose. The direction of the money decides who acts, on every screen, without exception.
